  • The trouble at NDDC

    The current squabbling at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is both sad and saddening. This is especially so because while the whole world is expressing concern about the extent of environmental pollution and degradation in the Niger Delta region following the release of the United Nations Environment Protection (UNEP) environmental assessment report on Ogoniland, the agency’s management and board are engaged in a bitter feud, which may prove fatal to the interest of the people of the region.   • Nigeria’s comical Ali

    Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf, Sadam Hussein’s information minister during the 1993 war, was referred to by the Western media as ‘Comical Ali’ because of his notoriety for deliberately standing the truth on its head. His stock in trade was deception; he could lie in his sleep where issues affecting the regime he served were concerned. He deliberately misinformed Iraqi nationals about the true situation of things in the country in his attempt to hold on to his position as the head of the information machinery of the disgraced Iraqi dictator.
